What is CEASA?
CEASA is a group of undergraduate and graduate students interested in hydroponics and controlled environment agriculture. Members come from a wide variety of majors from Engineering and Plant Sciences to Business Management and Fine Arts. All students are welcome.
The mission of CEASA is to promote hands on experience and educate students with regard to controlled environment agriculture practices along with innovative engineering concepts. Hands on experience is provided through the design, maintenance, and usage of hydroponic growing systems in a research greenhouse to produce crops that are later sold at local farmer’s markets in Tucson.
CEASA has year-round access to a University of Arizona research greenhouse to experiment with different systems and grow crops for sale at the local farmer’s market. The funds generated are used to reinvest in our growing systems, attend short courses, and go on field trips to commercial greenhouses and related agricultural businesses. Currently, we have one aeroponic unit and two ebb and flood units running. We are growing a variety of leaf lettuces and herbs including basil and oregano. We are currently working on designing and building a new aquaponic unit as well as a portable hydroponics unit for educational demonstrations.
Currently we sell our club produce, and produce from the CEAC teaching greenhouse at the St. Phillips Plaza Farmers Market on Saturday mornings from 8:00am to 12:00pm. We will be at the St. Phillip's Plaza Market every other week during the Summer and begin selling produce regularly in October and continue until about the first week in June. We primarlity sell lettuce and tomatoes, but also sell cherry tomatoes, orange bell peppers, cucumbers, and basil when avaiable. The club typically meets on Monday afternoons from 2:00pm to 3:00pm in the CEAC classroom at the Controlled Environment Agriculture Center. If you’d like to get involved, please contact one of the Club Officers. For more information please contact Austin at email@example.com.
