The Prototype Lunar Greenhouse (LGH) is equipped as a Bioregenerative Life Support System (BLSS) through the design and construction of an innovative hydroponic plant growth chamber. Centered on using plants to sustain a continuous vegetarian diet for astronauts, a typical BLSS employs plants and crop production in addition for food, to also provide air revitalization, water recycling, and waste recycling for the crew. Fulfilling the requirement of NASA's GES and the late Mr. Steckler's dream of space colonization, the LGH aims to deliver more than supporting a sustained human presence in space. The following PowerPoint titled "SPFGC: Automated hydroponic plant growth chamber Animation of 25 days of plant growth" is a preliminary study to grow crops within a closed growing system at the US South Pole Station. It was designed, built and operated by NSF projects at UA-CEAC from 2004 – 2012 with Phil Sadler, Sadler Machine Co and Lane Patterson, Green Sense Farms [formerly CEAC graduate student].  The Lunar Greenhouse Outreach Teaching Module (LGH-OTM) was created to give the public a glimpse into The University of Arizona and NASA project. A model module was built that houses live plants and works much like the actual greenhouse chambers with a hydroponic growing system. [READ MORE]
