About the course:
Hands-on intensive training is hydroponic crop production. Focusing on Tomatoes and/or Lettuce.
Training, balancing classroom and greenhouse time, is provided by professionals in the growing field of Hydroponics and CEA.
Topics include: Greenhouse Basics, Hydroponic Crop Layout, Pollination, Food Safety, Business Basic, Crop Maintenance, Pruning, Harvesting, Plant Nutrition, Integrated Pest Management, Organic Nutrition.
Round Table Discussion with Top Greenhouse Engineers.
New topics this year include a section on organic hydroponic nutrition and discussions on vertical farming and lighting.
About the instructors:
Dr. Stacy Tollefson is our newly appointed CEAC Faculty. She received her Ph.D in Agricultural & Biosystems Engineering, Hydroponic Vegetable Production and Pest Management in December 2014. Currently she works with the UofA-CEAC teaching Introduction to Hydroponics and Greenhouse Pest Management, as a Farm Manager for Maggie’s Farm Arizona, and additionally sits on USDA Hydroponic Taskforce. Dr. Tollefson gained experience as the Greenhouse Manager for Dr. Rorabaugh's teaching greenhouse for 2 years overseeing pest and disease management for that greenhouse and other CEAC projects. She was a USDA National Needs Fellow for 3 years and an NSF GK-12 Fellow for 1 year. Her interests include integrated pest management, organic production methods, aquaponics, and education and outreach.
Myles Lewis is a young professional with 10+ years of experience working with a variety of greenhouse systems and crops. His focus has been on transplant, vegetable, and herb production in controlled environments such as greenhouses and growth chambers. Implementing modern agricultural techniques and systems for food production in traditional and non-traditional locations.
